Since the 1980's, 33% of ski areas have gone out of business and another 150 are considered "at risk".
They are more affordable and more accessible to more people. They support local communities by providing jobs and a place for multiple generations to recreate in the great outdoors.
Most skiers and riders begin at smaller, community ski areas and graduate to bigger ski resorts.
Community and independent ski areas are a crucial part of the overall ski industry ecosystem and as they go away, the whole sport suffers.
The Mountain Playground Group is a solutions based approached designed to assist ski areas to be more profitable and sustainable. We provide small ski areas with:
- Sharing in best practices
- Marketing, advocacy & awareness
- Regular operations and marketing phone calls that include a specialist/expert speaker.
- Examining expenses and working towards achieving economies of scale
- Working on large scale initiatives designed to increase participating
Our ski areas are banding together to make a positive impact and increase their chance of survival.
The Mountain Rider’s Alliance was founded in 2010 due to the growing concern about the direction the ski industry was headed. Big business had infiltrated the sport, consolidating ownership and forcing smaller ski areas out of business, an alarming trend that continues today.
MRA has been the leading voice on the importance of community ski areas and has been featured in over 200 media articles. MRA’s slogan of “Creating Sustainable Mountain Playgrounds tm” resonates with many snow enthusiasts across the globe. MRA has worked with ski areas in 3 different countries as well as providing consulting and master planning.
MRA will be hosting the Summer Shredfest at Beartooth Basin, in Red Lodge, MT on June 16–18, 2017. The annual event will include a symposium “Community Ski Areas at Risk” and will have a panel discussion and ski industry veteran Jon Reveal as the keynote speaker. The event will be streamed live.
